2. Indonesia, 2004

The 9.1-magnitude earthquake that rocked Indonesia from its epicenter off the coast of northern Sumatra on Dec. 26, 2004, was felt in several countries in the southeast Pacific. It was the third largest earthquake ever recorded and triggered the world’s deadliest tsunami. Nearly 228,000 people were killed or declared missing and presumed dead. More than 1.5 million were displaced.
