The compound was surrounded by high walls, and a courier system was used to communicate information, keeping bin Laden’s presence hidden, according to Monitor reports. But the house was eight times larger than most of the others in the area, according to The New York Times, raising the question: How did that alone not arouse suspicion?
When the million-dollar, three-story compound was first built, it was on the outskirts of the city at the end of a dirt road, Reuters reports, although other homes have since been built nearby. Associated Press reporter Nahal Toosi tweeted, “Can get a glimpse of compound. People here say it’s unusually large. Saw fancy big cars going in and out of it.”
