Monitor correspondent Fahad Shah, right, works on his computer at his office in Srinagar, India, on Jan. 21, 2022. His arrest comes amid a widening crackdown against media in Kashmir, which is under direct rule from Delhi.

It is with deep concern that we have learned of the arrest of The Christian Science Monitor’s correspondent in Kashmir, Fahad Shah. We urge the Kashmir authorities to release him immediately.

Mr. Shah is an internationally respected and trusted reporter who has written for The Christian Science Monitor for several years. His arrest for uploading “anti-national content” to the website he edits, The Kashmir Walla, comes in the wake of protracted harassment by the police, and we call on the local authorities to respect Mr. Shah's status as an independent journalist.

Why is Christian Science in our name?

Our name is about honesty. The Monitor is owned by The Christian Science Church, and we’ve always been transparent about that.

The Church publishes the Monitor because it sees good journalism as vital to progress in the world. Since 1908, we’ve aimed “to injure no man, but to bless all mankind,” as our founder, Mary Baker Eddy, put it.

Here, you’ll find award-winning journalism not driven by commercial influences – a news organization that takes seriously its mission to uplift the world by seeking solutions and finding reasons for credible hope.
