Gerhard Sommer was an SS officer who served in Italy and participated in the massacre of 560 civilians in an Italian village, part of the Nazi campaign against Italian resistance groups. An Italian military court convicted him, along with nine other Nazis, in abstentia in 2005, according to the Guardian. All 10 of the men, who received life sentences, were in Germany at the time. Sommer has been under investigation in Germany for years, but no charges have been issued.
