The World Cup, hosted in South Africa this year, introduced the world to the vuvuzuela, a quirky instrument that both delighted and annoyed soccer fans (and even non-soccer fans) throughout the summer. The global sporting event also kicked the word "vuvuzuela" into the No. 2 spot for the most popular words of 2010.
Meanwhile, "climate change" and "global warming" remained on everyone's minds, if their No. 2 spot is any indication – even if blizzards of 2010, which bowled over Washington, also launched the words "snowmagedden" and "snowpocalyse" (No. 7 on the list).
