Former President Bill Clinton appeared before the FIFA executive committee to make the case that the United States already has what is necessary to host the World Cup – transit, stadia, accommodations – in place. When the Cup last took place in the United States in 1994, it saw 3.6 million attendees – the largest attendance in the history of the tournament (based on the stadia in the 18 proposed host cities, almost 5 million sellable tickets are projected for a 2022 tournament).
Detractors of the United States as a host country emphasize the fact that the United States hosted the tournament only 16 years ago. FIFA also cited a “medium” legal risk in the US hosting the tournament due to a lack of government guarantees.
