The former Haitian leader, known for his corruption and brutality, headed to France after giving up his presidency in 1986 amid rising unrest. He and his family lived a lavish European lifestyle for awhile, but a divorce from his wife left Duvalier low on cash and forced him into a more modest life. France refused to officially grant him political asylum, and Duvalier faced attempts to expel him from the country and put him on trial – although a Swiss bank’s agreement to release more than $4 million to him (a decision fought by the Swiss ministry) may have eased the pain a bit. He recently returned to Haiti for unclear reasons and was put under arrest and charged with embezzlement, corruption and a number of other crimes.
