DOMA and Prop. 8 struck down: Gay marriage laws around the globe

There is no national gay marriage legislation in the pipeline in the US, however, numerous countries around the globe already recognize same-sex marriage or the right to civil unions. Here’s the breakdown by region.

4. Canada and the United States

Canada was the fourth country in the world to legalize gay marriage. Same-sex marriage was already legal in eight Canadian provinces by the time the 2005 Civil Marriage Act was passed.

A handful of states grant residents equal marriage rights in the United States, including Connecticut (2008), Iowa (2009), Massachusetts (2003), New Hampshire (2010), New York (2011), Vermont (2009 – but recognized civil unions beginning in 1999), District of Columbia (2009), and most recently Washington (2012).
