Palestine papers: More nations floated for Palestinian resettlement

Al Jazeera's release this week of the so-called 'Palestine papers' revealed a US suggestion made in 2008 that Palestinian refugees be permanently resettled in South America. Here are some of the countries proposed as permanent resettlement locations.

Other proposals

In 2010, the US proposed settlement in special areas along the Egypt-Libya border and in Iraq, according to a columnist for The Guardian. The rest of refugees, he suggested, should be absorbed into Arab countries where they are already located, with funding from the international community.

According to a 2009 article for The Christian Science Monitor, there were about 15,000 Palestinian refugees in Iraq at the time (of the original 34,000), some of whom have since resettled in the US. Others were resettled in places such as Iceland and Sweden.
