Police were still struggling Wednesday to put down protests in Yemen that have been steadily ongoing for several days and on-and-off for weeks now. Conciliatory gestures from the government, most notably a promise from President Ali Abdullah Saleh that he would not run for reelection in the 2013 presidential elections, have not been enough to satsify protesters, the New York Times reported. On Sunday, more than 1,000 people turned out in the streets of the capital in a seemingly leaderless event that bore similarities to Egypt's mass uprisings.
