Misurata

Location: About 120 miles east of Tripoli, on the Mediterranean coast.

Status: Opposition controlled.

Protests reached Libya’s third-largest city on Feb. 20, according to reports, and the opposition had taken over the town by Feb. 24. However, Qaddafi forces remain barricaded at an air base and barracks at the edge of the town, The Washington Post reports, and periodic fighting has erupted from there. Rebels now control a radio station in Misurata and have broadcasted on behalf of the opposition movement. On Monday a government helicopter attempted to destroy the radio antenna of the station, but was thwarted by residents that showered it with gunfire.
