Sabha – some 400 miles south of Tripoli, deep in the desert – is one of only a couple of places in the country still in Qaddafi’s hands. Fighting was reported there this morning. As the site of a military and air force base, it could be a good hideout for Qaddafi, according to the AP. It also provides easy access to Chad and Niger to the south should Qaddafi have to flee Libya entirely.
Reuters reports that the rebels expect Sabha to be Qaddafi’s “final stronghold.”
