The Nation reports that two eyewitnesses to the hikers’ arrest from a nearby Kurdish village say that Shourd, Fattal, and Bauer were on Iraqi territory when they were arrested and that Iranian border guards crossed into Iraq to arrest them. The border region is disputed territory and has been the site of sporadic clashes between Iran and the Kurds.
