Lebanon has long lived under the shadow of Syria and is today split between supporters and opponents of the Assad regime. The Lebanese government, which is dominated by allies of Damascus, has lent its support for Assad's promised reforms and in early October abstained from a United Nations Security Council vote on a resolution condemning the violence in Syria. Many Lebanese are worried that, given the long-standing ties between the two countries and the political polarization in Lebanon, Syria's troubles will spill across the border.
