A suicide car bombing of the US Embassy in Beirut killed 49 embassy staff and injured 34 more. At the time, it was the deadliest attack ever on a US diplomatic mission abroad. It came after multinational forces, including a US delegation, entered the country to try and restore order during the Lebanese civil war.
A second bombing of the embassy in 1984 killed 11 people and injured 58, according to the State Department. The embassy closed for about a year in 1989 due to security concerns.
