Painting by Manet brings $3.96 million at auction
Manet mania gripped the art world Tuesday night as one of the 19th-century French painter's major works, ''La Promenade,'' fetched a record $3.96 million and two works the artist once gave to an American dentist fetched more than $1 million each.
The Manet records were set at an auction at Christie's in which four other paintings brought $1 million or more. The overall sale of 93 paintings totaled was sold for $3.96 million, just missing the $4.2 million record for a Cezanne. The Cezanne was described as his last major still-life likely to be auctioned.
