Palin addresses her daughter Bristol's out-of-wedlock pregnancy at some length in the book. In part, she blames the pregnancy on her own frequent absences from home due to her position as governor of Alaska. She expresses pride in Bristol's decision to have her baby and raise him on her own. However, she makes clear, she has no patience with the notion that single motherhood is an appropriate "lifestyle choice." She lashes out at fictional TV character Murphy Brown and her controversial decision to raise her baby on her own.
"The left wants us to believe that any grouping we choose to call a family is worthy of the name ... [but] when it comes to raising good citizens, not all 'lifestyle choices' are equal," Palin writes.
Her conclusion: "[G]iven a choice of role models between Bristol and Murphy Brown, I choose Bristol."
