Sarah Palin's heroes – and antiheroes

4. Susan B. Anthony vs. Margaret Sanger

Palin writes that feminist crusader Susan B. Anthony "saw the fight for the rights of the unborn as part of the broader fight for women's rights."

Palin says she is proud to call herself a conservative feminist and writes admiringly of several of the founders of the American women's movement, including Susan B. Anthony. She casts Anthony as a champion of the rights of unborn children, because she fought to ensure that they could not be "willed away" from their mothers. Margaret Sanger, on the other hand, she sees as "a great exception to the culture of life promoted by the early feminists" because of her advocacy of birth control. She also calls Sanger "an advocate of Nazi-style eugenics."
