My Dog Tulip is a memoir by British man of letter J.R. Ackerly, recounting the story of the 15 years ("the best years of my life") that he lived with an Alsatian shepherd named Queenie (called "Tulip" in the book). Despite his many gifts, Ackerly was a difficulty personality, pushed further from the mainstream society of his time by his homosexuality. But when Queenie – an undisciplined 18-month-old pup – came into his life, he discovered a love beyond any he had ever imagined.
Yet this is not a sentimental dog story. Ackerly had an acerbic wit and he manages to convey his great love for his subject in his own unique fashion.
Once you've read "My Dog Tulip," be sure that you also see the wonderful animated film.
