Although there’s no way of knowing what Payton considered the greatest run of his career, biographer Jeff Pearlman is convinced it occurred in a 1977 game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Surprisingly, he only gained 18 yards on the carry, but it was such a spectacular physical effort that it helped trigger a comeback from a 17-point, third-quarter deficit. Chicago won 28-27 as Payton compiled 192 yards on the ground.
What made the 18-yard run so memorable was that he broke seven tackles, kept his balance, and continued driving despite taking some of the best shots the Chiefs could dish out.
Jim Brown, perhaps the most punishing runner in NFL history, was not familiar with Payton before seeing this highlight-reel effort. In speaking of his impressions, Brown said, “[Payton] fought for every inch. He must have twisted and knocked three or four guys over. Spun around, accelerated. And I said, ‘Oh, my goodness – what kind of animal is this?’ ”
