"I was appearing on Broadway in 'The Irregular Verb to Love'... I remember I was reading in bed – my Barbadian maid had just gone marketing when she suddenly burst into my room saying the elevator operator had told her President Kennedy had been shot – I thought she had misunderstood – it was so preposterous and unbelievable – I jumped up and rushed to the TV – alas – it was indeed the horrible truth – we did not play that night and I believe Broadway was dark for several nights."
