5. Clean and cover your tires

You don't have to cover your tires as smartly as this classic in this 2008 file photo from Maryland. But whenever your car is stored for long periods of time, you can help the tires last longer by covering them and removing the vehicle's weight from them.

Use a tire protectent to prevent the ravages of ultraviolet light or ozone damage in the summer and harsh weather conditions in the winter. Be sure to clean tire sidewalls with Armor All or a similar product. Whenever your vehicle is stored for long periods of time (a classic car, for example), cover your tires and remove the vehicle's weight or load to help prevent sidewall cracks from forming.
