Vermont’s gubernatorial race between Democratic candidate Peter Shumlin and Republican Brian Dubie is a tie-worthy toss-up. Mr. Dubie, who was lieutenant governor to Gov. Jim Douglas throughout the last decade, shows Vermont’s Republican support at the state level. Mr. Shumlin, a state senator, has a slight lead in the polls even though he trailed Dubie early on. This brings into question the power of the Republican base and highlights the split between the Democrats and progressives in the state.
Shumlin and Dubie have been head-to-head since 2002, when Dubie defeated Shumlin in the race for lieutenant governor.
Other candidates on Vermont’s ballot include Cris Ericson of the Marijuana Party, Progressive Martha Abbott, and Socialist Ben Mitchell.
