Though she had a significant cash advantage in the race, Representative Kirkpatrick lost to Paul Gosar, one of the Republican candidates backed by Sarah Palin. He won 50 percent to her 44 percent.

Kirkpatrick took Arizona’s First District seat in 2008 after incumbent Rick Renzi retired amid scandal. She defeated her Republican opponent by more than 15 percentage points in that election.
