RNC Chairman Michael Steele has had his share of missteps during his two-year tenure, turning the usually low-key position into one of public prominence.

10. Suggesting the Republican Party wasn’t ready to lead

It was January 2010, the start of the midterm election year. Regardless of the facts – and he certainly wasn’t alone in his view that the GOP wasn’t ready to take over Congress – it’s just not something you say out loud when you’re chairman of the party. But Steele did, to Sean Hannity on Fox News.

Mr. Hannity asked him, “Do you think you can take over the House?”

“Not this year,” Steele replied.

When pressed on this point, Steele then backed off. “Well, I don’t know yet, because I don’t know all the candidates yet,” he said.
