Jack Dempsey was one of America's sports icons in the 1920s, along with Babe Ruth and Red Grange. He became heavyweight champion in 1919 by defeating Jess Willard. He survived a serious challenge by Luis Firpo in 1923, but Dempsey lost the title to Gene Tunney in 1926. The two men met in the ring again the next year in the famous 'Long Count' fight, in which Tunney came out victorious.
