Jack Johnson was the first African-American heavyweight champion. He reached the pinnacle of his sport by beating Tommy Burns in Australia in 1908. Johnson lost the title to Jess Willard in Havana, Cuba, in 1915. During his career, Johnson fought in 123 bouts, winning 77 of them with 48 by knockout.
