In 1954, Linus Pauling was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his research into the nature of chemical bonds and the structure of molecules. Nine years later, he received the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts that led to a agreement between the United States and the Soviet Union – a treaty that outlawed all above-ground testing of nuclear weapons. Pauling is one of only two people awarded two Nobel Prizes in different fields, the other being Marie Curie, who won the Chemistry and Physics prizes.
