Egypt is a significant oil producer and has the largest refining sector in Africa, however, due to rising domestic demand it does require a small amount of petroleum imports. Production has declined, though modestly, and was at 736,000 bpd in 2010 - a decrease of .6 percent over the previous year. Natural gas is expected to be a larger source of growth due to increased exploration. Revenues from the Suez Canal, the main transit conduit of oil from the Persian Gulf, are also a sizable portion of Egypt’s economy.
