“Regarding foreign relations, Xi will have to appease the international community's concerns about China's rise as a regional and global power, because China's economic development needs peaceful and steady external circumstances. He certainly will not want any conflict with the US to hinder his succession.
As the United States elects its president later this year, some demagogues are trying to woo voters by inciting further discontent with Beijing's economic expansion and with China's reluctance to support the sanctions against Iran and Syria. Their criticism of Beijing arises from American displeasure with Beijing's unfair trade practices and its nontransparent military buildup.
China's vice foreign minister, Cui Tiankai, has said that the political trust between China and the US is insufficient to support further development of their relations. Xi's trip is a chance to address this problem.”
